MAT Medication Management in our San Diego Drug Treatment Program

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction combines medication with behavioral health services. It has been shown to not only save lives but also increase recovery rates. Present Moments Recovery maintains the availability of MAT medications (when appropariate) throughout the entire continuum of care we offer.

Our clinical staff will use whatever tools are available to assist our client’s recovery and this includes the prescribing and administration of medication to help manage craving like Suboxone, Sublocade, and Subutex (all brand names for buprenorphine).

Our Medical Director will continue existing therapies (where appropriate) or prescribe MAT medications like these. Then, our clinical team will monitor the effectiveness of the medication from a therapeutic perspective and make the appropriate recommendations as the continuum of care unfolds.

Studies show that MAT, when coupled with counseling, greatly increases one's ability to attain long term sobriety.

Our treatment team oversees the Doctor’s protocol while supporting client comfort throughout their plan. Our Medical Director leads the team by prescribing medications, monitoring progress, and managing a personalized treatment regimen. This way, the treatment is holistic and truly supportive in nature.

The Benefits of Medication Assisted Treatment During Rehab

MAT significantly reduces the risk of relapse and opioid overdose deaths. In fact, the risk of relapse for someone with an opioid use disorder after detox only is 70%; heroin is 91%. MAT drastically reduces that risk.

Medication-assisted treatment reduces cravings, anxiety, withdrawal symptoms, and post-acute withdrawal syndrome, which can cause severe withdrawal symptoms to recur up to a year after treatment, interfering with an individual’s ability to continue or engage in other therapies. Managing these physical issues allows the individual to focus their attention on their psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs through therapy, group meetings, and recovery support groups.

At Present Moments, MAT is used in combination with interdisciplinary interventions, including evidence-based therapies like dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). We also assess each patient for mental health issues so that we can address them, as well as other healthcare needs that may come up in the assessment process, such as chronic pain.

Evidence Based Therapeutic Practices to Complement Medication Assisted Treatment

Our continuum of care will include the following therapeutic activities:

  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Drug and alcohol counseling
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Expressive Therapies: Art Therapy, Music Therapy, and Journaling
  • Individual Therapy Sessions
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Group Therapy
  • Somatic Therapies: Mindfulness and Qigong

Present Moments uses MAT because it is well-researched and evidence-based and backed by all major medical associations for use in substance use disorder treatment. The medications we use in medication-assisted treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD) have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been clinically proven to make both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment safer and more successful.

What Addictions Benefit Most From MAT?

Medication-assisted treatment is mostly used to treat addiction to opioids like heroin and painkillers like fentanyl. Combined with counseling and behavior modification therapies, the prescribed medication can help people safely taper their opioid dependence, stabilize their systems, and engage in their disease management plan to maintain recovery.

MAT can also reduce the discomfort of medical detox. As with the medication-assisted treatment used in our opioid addiction treatment program, medication-assisted treatment used in detox for those in whom it is medically necessary helps stabilize their systems and safely taper away from the opiates.

To help an individual begin a sustained recovery, treatment must include a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach such as the treatment services we provide at Present Moments in our MAT program.

Do we let patients continue of MAT throughout all Levels of Drug Treatment?

Yes, if our medical director deems it appropriate,  we will let our clients choose to continue with MAT during treatment if they want to.

MAT Medications Used in Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs

The medications used in MAT help with treatment in a number of ways. Some of the medications used at Present Moments include:

  • Buprenorphine, an opioid medication that, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms in a person with an opioid use disorder and can be tolerated relatively well by most people.
  • Vivitrol® or naltrexone, which blocks opioids and alcohol from producing euphoric effects. Vivitrol should only be taken under the guidance of a licensed and experienced medical addiction treatment provider.
  • Suboxone, which combines buprenorphine and naloxone, prevents cravings and helps people to get treatment and move into recovery. Like buprenorphine, it is also noted by NIDA as an effective medication to treat opioid use disorder.

Clients have the choice to continue with medication-assisted treatment for maintenance. Present Moments offers medication-assisted treatment in both our inpatient and outpatient opioid treatment programs as well as during medical detoxification.
