Insurance for treatment is more confusing than it should be. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what's covered, what isn't, and how to actually use your benefits.
Insurance is the single biggest reason families don't pursue treatment. Not because it isn't covered, it usually is, but because nobody explains it in plain language. Let's fix that.
The law is on your side: Mental Health Parity
The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires most insurance plans to cover addiction and mental health treatment at the same level as physical health treatment. If your plan covers a hospital stay for surgery, it has to cover residential addiction treatment in a comparable way. This is federal law.
What's typically covered
- Medical detox (inpatient, supervised withdrawal management)
- Residential treatment (24/7 care, usually 30-90 days)
- Partial Hospitalization (PHP), full days, return home or sober living at night
- Intensive Outpatient (IOP), 3 days/week, 3 hours/day
- Standard Outpatient, weekly therapy
- Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), Suboxone, Vivitrol, etc.
- Psychiatric care and dual-diagnosis mental health treatment
What's usually NOT covered (or is harder to get)
- Sober living / housing (covered occasionally, often out of pocket)
- Luxury amenities and 'wellness' add-ons
- Treatment that isn't deemed 'medically necessary' by the insurer
PPO vs HMO: it matters
PPO plans give you flexibility, you can use out-of-network providers (like us) and still get strong coverage. HMO plans usually require you to stay in-network and get a referral. Most quality treatment programs are out-of-network, so a PPO opens far more doors.
What 'in-network' and 'out-of-network' actually mean
In-network = the provider has a contract with your insurer for set rates. Out-of-network = no contract, but your PPO still covers a percentage. Out-of-network coverage is often 60-80% after deductible, which, on a 30-day program, can mean the difference is small enough that the right treatment is worth it.
