Holidays can be triggering for people in recovery. From family gatherings to social pressure, here are practical strategies for staying sober through the hard seasons.
Holidays are loaded. Family dynamics, old roles, alcohol everywhere, financial stress, grief for people who aren't there anymore. For someone in early recovery, the season can feel like a minefield. Here's how to walk through it.
Plan your exit before you arrive
Drive yourself. Know what time you're leaving. Have a reason ready. The single best gift you can give your recovery is the ability to leave the moment things get heavy.
Bring your own drink
Sparkling water with lime, NA beer, kombucha, whatever works. Having a drink in your hand stops the 'can I get you something?' loop and removes one source of decision fatigue.
Have a script for 'are you drinking?'
You don't owe anyone your story. 'Not tonight, thanks' or 'I'm taking a break from it' shuts down 95% of follow-up questions. If they push, that's about them, not you.
Schedule a recovery check-in for the day of
A meeting that morning. A call with your sponsor right before. A text to a sober friend during. Add it to the calendar like it's a doctor's appointment, because it is.
HALT
Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. The four states most likely to lead to a slip. Eat before you go. Sleep the night before. Don't show up emotionally raw. Take care of the basics first.
If you slip, call us before you spiral
A slip is not the end. The cover-up is what turns a slip into a relapse. Call or text. We've heard it all. We can help you figure out the next right step instead of the next worst one.
