Discover Addiction Recovery in San Diego

Like any other city in California, San Diego is complex and diverse. According to the last census, San Diego is the eighth largest city in the United States, with a population of over 1,374,076. Like many cities, there are social problems that are being combatted, including addiction. It's also a fantastic place to get and stay sober.

Factors Contributing to Addiction in the Community

San Diego is a major tourist destination, contributing to a somewhat temporary culture. Economic disparities exist while the economy is strong between tourism, biotechnology, and defense. San Diego's proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border has historically brought challenges to the area related to drug trafficking. This can lead to more drugs in circulation in both the city and potentially affecting the well-being of nearby suburbs.

There is also significant military presence with multiple bases. Military personnel and their families can face unique challenges and some who have seen combat live with mental health issues like PTSD. Over 6% of military veterans live with a substance use disorder, while 15% have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, according to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

It's important to emphasize that while these traits can contribute to addiction-related challenges in certain parts of San Diego, they don't provide a complete picture of the city's diverse communities.

California, and San Diego specifically, has been employing efforts to combat the opioid overdose crisis and provide more opportunities for people to get sober. There is an exciting community waiting for people in recovery. The community has much to offer people and there is plenty of experience, strength and hope in San Diego.

What Recovery in San Diego Has to Offer

San Diego also has a robust recovery community, with many members that have been sober for decades. People are welcoming; there are many diverse members, with people from many backgrounds. Many members of the recovery community have informal groups where people spend time meditating, surfing, running, and having fun with others in recovery.

There also includes a range of support services, treatment options, and resources for individuals seeking help with addiction issues.

Here are some aspects of the addiction recovery community in San Diego:

  • Treatment Centers and Programs: San Diego has many addiction treatment centers, including inpatient and outpatient facilities. These centers provide a variety of treatment approaches, such as detoxification, counseling, therapy, and medication-assisted treatment.
  • 12-Step and Mutual Support Groups: 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) have a strong presence in San Diego. These groups offer a community of peers who share their experiences, seek guidance, and work through the 12-step process.
  • Non-12-Step Alternatives: Besides traditional 12-step programs, non-12-step recovery options focus on different approaches, such as SMART Recovery.
  • Recovery Community Centers: Some organizations in San Diego have established recovery community centers.  Here, people can socialize with others who are in similar situations and participate in recovery-focused activities.
  • Supportive Housing: San Diego has initiatives and organizations that provide supportive housing for individuals in recovery. Sober housing options can help people transition from treatment programs back into the community while receiving ongoing support.
  • Recovery Events and Activities: The recovery community in San Diego often hosts events, workshops, and activities that promote sober socializing and engagement. These events provide opportunities for people in recovery to build connections and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Access to Healthcare: San Diego's healthcare system includes resources for individuals seeking addiction treatment and mental health support. This can be crucial for those requiring medical assistance as they recover.
